Why September is the most popular birth month

September birth

It’s a busy month for brand new parents. More babies are born in September than there are all year round! A fun fact, but there is actually a reason why most babies are born in the fall. And with a little bit of math it’s not very difficult to figure out why.

Cold winters

If you turn back the clock, you’ll see that nine months before September you’re right in the middle of December and the holiday season! The days are shorter and it’s cold outside, so logically we spend a lot more time indoors where it’s warm and cosy. No wonder so many babies are born nine months later!

Looking for warmth and connection

There is also a biological factor at play. Our bodies naturally seek out more warmth (and cuddles) during the cold winter months. Not only to survive, but because we need it to make dopamine and serotonin – neurotransmitters that make us feel happy. So, in winter we cuddle more!

Popular time to start trying

However, those cuddles are not completely by accident either. Statistics show that many couples start trying to have a baby once summer is finished. During summer we are often busy with other things and spend a lot of time outside. After summer, we land in a more peaceful time. Many couples take this opportunity to start trying for a child.

The most popular day

Worldwide most babies are born on the 16th of September. Looking back to December, most of these babies were probably conceived at the start of the Christmas holidays. Who doesn’t love a good Christmas story?
